LYNN’S LOWDOWN Christchurch has a rich, and some would say infamous, history regarding Lions games over the years. But in the wake of the 2011 earthquake, it doesn’t possess a Test-capable venue, so this will be the only chance for Cantabrians to see the tourists in action. Against the powerful Crusaders side, it will be a useful guide to what might be expected in the Test matches ahead. No side is likely to field more All Blacks against them.
No touring side likes being beaten by another made up entirely of students, but that was the lot for the 1977 Lions, downed 21-9 by NZ Universities at Lancaster Park.
HISTORY: THE TEMPEST The 1971 Lions game with Canterbury has gone down as one of the most combative encounters in touring matches in New Zealand. Alex Wyllie recounted his memory of events in the 14-3 loss. “All I can go by, and the talk among the guys in the front row, was that before the game Hoppy [Alistair Hopkinson] had been talking to some other props around the country and was told they [the Lions] were cheating and causing other problems. I was playing on the side of the scrum then and I remember Hoppy saying, ‘If you don’t get your bloody head up and do this, then you’re going to get it.’ They didn’t do anything about it and [Lions and Scotland prop Sandy] Carmichael just came boring in and dropping his head and everything else. So – in those days you could get away with it – Hoppy belted him. The other fight was a bit of a scuffle going on between, I’m pretty sure it was, Hamish Macdonald and Ray McLoughlin, and I just stepped in to try and help. Ray just took a swing at me and hit me. He split my cheek open but broke his thumb.”

LIONS REACTION The touring British press in 1971 had always been keen to have a shot at aspects of the NZ game, and this match gave them free rein. David Frost’s view in The Observer was typical in apportioning all blame to Canterbury. “In the first place Canterbury descended to the lowest level of thuggery, from the very start hitting the Lions with fists, knees, or boots at set scrums and lineouts and even in the open field. It was brutal and utterly out of character with the rest of the tour. Canterbury should be struck off the itinerary of the next Lions tour of New Zealand.” ONE-UP FOR THE SCARFIES No touring side likes being beaten by another made up entirely of students, but that was the lot for the 1977 Lions, downed 21-9 by NZ Universities at Lancaster Park. Central to the win was a contested long-range penalty attempt by halfback Doug Morgan. Television evidence suggested the goal was successful. The touch judges believed otherwise and it was over-ruled. As TP McLean said in Winter of Discontent, “It was an extraordinary event which became quite fateful when, eight minutes later, Mr [Kevin] Lynch awarded to [Paul] Macfie a try, which [Doug] Rollerson goaled, when [Universities halfback Mark] Romans at a scrum 5m plainly knocked the ball on before offering it on the pass to [David] Syms – God knows what the hooker was doing there – and Macfie a moment later found that the Lions’ defence was one man too few.”

Finding the ideal place to call home can be a challenge, and for these homeowners the decision to build meant not having to compromise on their wants. “You know when you find what you are looking for, and we just couldn’t find it,” they explain. “So we decided to create it for ourselves.” Seeking a home that was functional, familyfriendly and able to change and develop as their young children grew, the couple turned to designers Tobin Smith and Blair Paterson of CoLab Architecture. “It is incredibly important that you can relate to your designer and we instantly knew they understood what we wanted. Coupled with our builder, Clive Barrington they were a dream team.” For Tobin the synergy in the working relationship is one that made this project particularly special. “The homeowners knew how they wanted their home to function, both now and into the future, which allowed us to really understand and visualise how they wanted their home to perform; and Clive and his team were execptional at planning – staying one step ahead right throughout.” Describing the finished product as a “generous family home” Tobin and Blair have added their characteristic style to the project, transforming it from a simple structure into something special. “There is beauty to be found in simplicity,” explains Tobin, a feat perfectly embodied here. From the exterior the form is highlighted
through a play on black and white. Of particular note is the use of a metal cladding on the upper level of the home. Emphasising the lines of the home it brings an element of texture and depth, while enhancing the sense that this is something much more than simply a black and white home. “Classic design is achieved through simplicity and strength of concept,” offers Tobin. “And in this case it was about blending together all the clients’ wishes into a cohesive structure.” Merging the need for a self-contained guest quarter, multiple living areas, open spaces for entertaining and plenty of indoor-outdoor flow; the finished product has surpassed the homeowners’ expectation. “From coming through the front door, to the overall flow and feeling that has been achieved, we love all of it.” “It is classic, with elements of added visual interest,” continues the owner. “There are so many beautiful architectural details which lift it beyond being simple.” One such detail is the use of skylights, which with their lack of frames appear more as holes in the ceiling. A feat highlighted with the narrow slot window, in the formal living area. “The window extends up into a skylight,” explains Tobin. “It offers privacy to the outdoor courtyard, which is connected to the separate guest quarter, while performing in a practical sense to bring natural light into the room.”

CHRISTCHURCH’S NEW LANEWAYS Richard Dalman reviews the potential for a bit of Melbourne coming to our city.
Last week I was in Melbourne and made the obvious connections between that great city and Christchurch: a strong focus on arts and sports, a cool winter climate, and a central grid street layout with a river running through. What Melbourne is also famous for, and Christchurch is developing, is a strong laneway system. Because these are only about six to eight metres across they provide a more intimate street experience, and having no cars they are filled with street furniture for dining and relaxing. The laneways provide both a ‘shortcut’ for walking, as well as a place to sit, eat, drink, relax and enjoy. A successful laneway is ‘activated’ on both sides, with vibrant restaurants; bars and shopfronts opening out onto it, and pedestrians can view the offerings on each side of the laneway as they walk down. Laneways can also bring a ‘secret side’ to a city, providing a narrow access to hard-to-find bars, almost so secret, with little or no signage, that you need to be ‘in the know’ to find it. The Melbourne laneways are successful because the locals have developed a ‘culture’ of living with them. Even in the cold winter months they brave the elements to sit in the open under gas-fired heaters to enjoy the experience. If the Christchurch laneways are to be

successful, we need to develop that culture too, and be willing to compromise a bit of comfort. Laneways make sense in Christchurch providing access into the heart of our relatively large city blocks, allowing more retail frontage and shortcuts. The CERA Blueprint and the Christchurch City Council both encourage laneways within the Christchurch CBD, and have outlined existing, new and potential laneways on the attached map. Many of these lead into small squares to enhance the experience of travelling through and enjoying the open spaces within. Of course Christchurch has had laneways in the past – successful ones like Poplar Lane and Chancery Lane (the uncovered part), and less successful such as Press Lane and Tattersalls Lane. Christchurch currently has the new Stranges Lane off High Street. This works well because it provides a shortcut, is reasonably well activated with several restaurants and bars, has a feeling of intimacy because it is narrow, and features a small square at one end. It provides a good model for future laneways in the city. Recently completed is a laneway at 123 Victoria Street. This doesn’t follow the perfect model, but the wedge-shaped space that increases in width the further you move through is well populated with permanent timber furniture and trees giving it a human scale and a relaxed ambience. It is a sunny space, and because it is narrower at the street end, there is less traffic noise and wind. I think that the Christchurch laneway initiative is to be applauded and encouraged, and my hope is that Cantabrians will embrace the laneways and make them part of our own culture and story.

VULNERABILITY Anne Hudson explores the work of Christchurch’s own Ben Reid, one of New Zealand’s most prominent printmakers.
He does this not by creating a placard or shouting at us but by creating sensitive works that demand our attention in a subtle, almost subversive, way.
The New Zealand environment and its beauty is a source of national pride. It is our tūrangawaewae – place to stand. Accordingly, there is an awareness of the vulnerability of that landscape. New Zealand was, for much of its existence, unpopulated and without predators. No snakes, no rats, rabbits or stoats, no sheep, no cattle or deer. Many species were unable to adapt to the effect of man’s needs as a hunter and later as a cultivator. Many birds are extinct and some on the verge of extinction. Ben Reid seeks to portray that vulnerability and loss within his sensitive prints. He uses a multi-layered approach of different printing methods demonstrating a mastery of the printmaking genre, often combining multiple techniques, such as dry-point etching and wood block, in one work. Printing is a skill-based process. There are several stages to go through in the creation of a print. The final picture may have an abstract quality but the making takes mastery and control. In many ways it is like glass art and ceramics where the process and material used are integrally part of the finished piece. Ben Reid’s work is a good example of this. Dry-point etching, for example, requires a steady hand. The image is drawn on to the metal plate; there is no room for error. It is then inked and paper is pressed on to the image to pick up the raised design. Woodblock work also requires patience and skill. Once the etching or block has been made it can be used many times over with different coloured inks.
The layering of images on to the paper requires care and precision. Reid says of printing, “There are certain effects, moods and qualities that can be created in original prints that can only be achieved using printmaking processes.” Reid’s prints are often multi-layered, building up the image, each layer offering its own associations. Paper, printed like Victorian wallpaper with repeated patterns, form the background. They look pretty but the animals portrayed so prettily are predators, such as rats and stoats. Using another process, the subsequent layer puts the subject in focus. We are seeing the bird in its habitat but are also being made aware of conservation issues of global warming, pest control, and pollution – all threats at the hand of man. Drawn to the sensitive representation of the prime subject we might miss the more subtle illustration of predators and other foe. A darker meaning hidden behind the beauty creates a tension, an anxiety for the plight of his subjects. Reid’s titles are often written on the work adding yet another layer. The text becomes part of the work. Reid asks us to consider our flora and fauna, particularly birds, by reminding us of the damage done to them through human intervention, persuading us to be more sensitive to the environment. He does this not by creating a placard or shouting at us, but by creating sensitive works that demand our attention in a subtle, almost subversive, way. We are drawn into the work, admiring his technique, his drawings and juxtaposition of ideas and then once entrapped we are made aware of his serious message.

HOW TO DEFINE
YOUR LINES Landscape architect Craig Wilson breaks down the use of straight vs curved paths.
One of the key questions I ask garden design clients when putting together a design brief is if they prefer straight or curved lines in the proposed layout. While some clients are open to either, some will have strong views against one or the other. In observing landscape and garden design of the last few years, it seems that straight lines have been the order of the day. This could be a response to a number of factors. Firstly, many of the new homes recently built are contemporary in nature with crisp, clean lines and this theme has been extended out into the landscape and garden to create an integrated look. Another key driver has probably been the general reduction in section sizes. Straight lines are easier to apply to a small site and, if part of the brief, can be used to create a space that reads visually bigger. A curved layout in a smaller space will often create bigger, deeper garden beds, particularly in the corners of sections and this may not meet the requirement of an often-requested low-maintenance garden. When it comes down to pragmatic matters – straight lines
are cheaper and easier to build than curves, especially in hard landscape elements. Does this mean the curve is dead in landscape design? No, not at all. Curves can create a flowing, restful atmosphere that’s often difficult to create with straight lines. Curved lines will seem to be the right response when there’s a significant natural element on site to refer to, like a stream edge, large existing tree or sloping change of level. A contemporary curvaceous element can create a strong contrast to the straight lines of a building and create an exciting design element that disrupts the predictability of clean, crisp lines. A key to using curves well in the landscape is to keep them bold, simple and not overly complex or ‘wobbling’ all over the place. The next garden layout you look at isn’t right or wrong because it used straight lines or curves – it was hopefully a reflection of the homeowner’s wishes or a well-designed use of the available space and site constraints. My question to you is which do you prefer?

You may not know this about me but... I have step-children who came into my life when they were four and five years old; they are now 42 and 43. They both were adopted by my husband and his former wife and are of Indian heritage. So, we have a lovely blended family, and all our children have a very close bond. In the few years Little Bird Organics and its ‘Unbakeries’ have existed, Megan May has cemented her place as one of Auckland’s most important and influential chefs. Raw organic, vegan, natural and delicious goodness is what her and her team are all about. The tantalising, mouth-watering food they bring us is also the healthiest fare you could hope for – it’s free from meat, dairy, eggs, gluten, soy and refined sugar. Tell us a bit about your background and how Little Bird Organics was born. Little Bird Organics is a culmination of my love of food, health and wellbeing, the environment (I have a background in environmental science), and my upbringing on an organic farm. Not only is your personal health a reflection of how you feed and nourish yourself, it’s also a reflection of the health of our wider environment. We can’t escape the fact that in order to thrive we need to look after this planet, ourselves and each other. Most of our readers will know organic is a healthy choice but may not understand the full deal behind it. Can you explain how it differs from food that is just labelled as ‘natural’? Any product can be labelled ‘natural’. To be certified organic you must adhere to some pretty strict guidelines. Organics is much deeper than just having food without herbicides and pesticides on them. The process of growing organically is much healthier for the farmer and the rural communities they are grown in. Organics can have a positive impact on the earth as there is a focus on nourishing and replenishing the soil our food is grown in rather than depleting it. Importantly, it minimises the chemicals that make their way into our precious waterways.
What are your top healthy lifestyle tips for optimal wellbeing? Drink your greens, eat a lot of veges, develop a breathing or meditation practice and get some sleep! I also love cold showers for boosting circulation and immunity. If you have trouble getting started in the morning try swapping your coffee for a cold shower. You’ve got a couple of cafés in Auckland called ‘Unbakeries’ and something called the ‘Squeezery’? Our Unbakeries and Squeezery are an extension of our Little Bird Organics range, which you can get in health food stores and NW supermarkets around the country. We wanted to show people what a fresh wholefoods diet can look and taste like so we opened the cafés to showcase that. Cold-pressed juicing is an incredible way to make you feel amazing so we started our Squeezery. This supplies our stores with a range of delicious and healthy juices, nut milks and kefir drinks. You’ve got an amazing looking wellness retreat coming up in September at the Huka Lodge in Taupo. Tell us about some of the key features of this weekend. Food is the central part of the experience. The plant-based food we are serving is going to be incredible. Getting to work with the best local and organic ingredients with the exceptional Huka Lodge chefs is a highlight for me. People are going to be blown away at the beauty and flavours that we are creating together.

PLAYGROUND Simon Mullinger takes a trip to Tekapo Springs to discover late-night stargazing in the hot pools and see what else this winter retreat has on offer. After an eclectic Spotify playlist, two chicken wraps, a discussion on toilet training and a brief restroom stop, my wife and I arrived at a sunny, snow-dusted Tekapo just three hours after setting off from Christchurch. Tekapo has grown since we last stayed here, but it certainly hasn’t lost any of its natural beauty in the process. A quick drive through the town revealed the new residential developments, consisting mainly of holiday homes with a sprinkling of residents; the extended retail/ hospitality strip; a new footpath connecting the town to the area where the Church of the Good Shepherd can be found; and Tekapo Springs. We stayed at Peppers Bluewater Resort, which is a great option for those who like the independence of a self-contained home but with the convenience of an excellent restaurant, bar and even staff at your disposal. Our lake-view apartment was on two levels, with the upstairs offering a generous living area, full kitchen and a balcony with a superb view of the lake and shuttle buses to Tekapo Springs. Finding ourselves child-free for the night we headed out in the evening to Tekapo Springs to relax and indulge in some romantic stargazing. Who knew? Practically naked stargazing is a thing, and I for one am glad. Stargazing is a recent addition to Tekapo Springs’s offerings and why not? Who wouldn’t like lying in steaming hot pools, looking up at the Milky Way above snow-capped mountains with knowledgeable staff on hand to guide you through your aquatic astronomical journey. The experience took over two hours; we had a clear night allowing us to experience astronomy through the three telescopes (we saw Saturn, Jupiter and the Omega Nebula). After our education we entered the pools on special floating hammocks to drink in the night sky. I have no other benchmark to judge this style of stargazing on as this was my first experience, however, it is an experience not to be missed. For the more adventurous, Tekapo and the surrounding area is an alpine playground with mountaineering, kayaking, scenic flights, three ski fields, fishing, cycling and even glacier tours. We, however, wanted to channel our inner child and plumbed for ice skating at Tekapo Springs. I was a little apprehensive; my wife, however, was more intrepid – until she rather unceremoniously fell flat on her behind, arms flapping, legs skyward. We haven’t laughed so much in a long time. Ice skating is just pure, simple fun and a great activity as long as you don’t take yourself too seriously. For some, Tekapo is the place to refill the car, stretch those tired legs or indulge in a bite to eat before pressing on to somewhere else. Tekapo, today, is a destination in its own right, anchored by the burgeoning Tekapo Springs. If the continued growth is managed tastefully this has the potential to become a mini Wanaka and a great weekend or overnight escape from Christchurch. I for one am bringing my family back over the winter.

GO RACING IN AN SUV Ross Kiddie discovers the technology in Audi’s SQ7 is engineered for performance.
It’s going to cost you almost $200,000, but if you want a sport utility vehicle that you can do hot laps in at the Nurburgring, blast to 100km/h in 4.9sec and have it handle like a racing car, then the Audi SQ7 is the wagon that covers all bases. The SQ7 is an extension of the Q7 SUV, instead of having the 3-litre V6, it is powered by a 4-litre, twin-turbocharged, quad-camshaft V8, and is diesel-fed. Audi rates the engine with a staggering 320kW and 900Nm of torque, the latter realised at just 1000rpm to 3250rpm thanks to an electric compressor which works to the point where the turbochargers kick in fully, thereby eliminating any lag. It’s a clever system, and I guess, you’d expect nothing less from Audi, or a vehicle of this price. The reality is the SQ7 is loaded with kit, it’s not just the stuff that makes it go quick, like the engine, the eight-speed Tiptronic transmission, the clever sports rear differential and four-wheel-drive and steering, but the interior has a wealth of specification for both comfort and convenience. Nothing has been left to chance and, what’s more, the SQ7’s controls and layout are intuitive and it is also an SUV where seven
occupants can feel comfortable. For me, the SQ7 is more about its engineering, and while the mechanicals are structured for high performance, the ease at which it all seems to happen is amazing, the levels of refinement are enormous and its ability seems somewhat subdued. Yes, there is V8 burble out the exhaust pipes, and that in itself is misleading as you get the sound of a petrol engine, but as mentioned, the SQ7 is a diesel and there is little indication of that, except perhaps in its fuel usage statistics. Audi claims a 7.2-litre per 100km (39mpg) combined cycle rating for the seven-seater, which correlates well with the 8.9l/100km (32mpg) figure constantly showing on the trip computer. That sits alongside a 5l/100km (56mpg) instantaneous reading at 100km/h, the engine loping over at just 1350rpm. What makes those figures even more remarkable was that they were gleaned from a spirited test drive. I took the test car west to Springfield, returning back to the city via the scenic route State Highway 72. The SQ7 is a touring car of true genius, it whispers through the air and is relaxing to drive, yet when you want to push a bit

harder, and a bit quicker, it responds with an athleticism that is unrealistic for a vehicle which weighs in at around 2.4-tonne. The steering is quick and affords the perfect feel, the suspension is compliant providing a moderately soft ride, yet it arrests body movement with amazing control along with dealing to uneven road surfaces. Often a rutted corner will unbalance a car and move it off-centre, but in the SQ7 that doesn’t happen, it steers precisely. A lot of that has to do with the quality of the huge sport specification Continental tyres (285/40 x 21in), but the rest must be attributed to the perfection within the Quattro four-wheel-drive system which affords natural grip. As mentioned in my introduction, the SQ7 handles like it was destined for the track, there are even drive modes and dash display readouts to encourage that. I also mentioned the SQ7’s acceleration off the mark. It’s impressive, too, at highway speed, an overtaking manoeuvre between
80km/h and 120km/h achievable in just 3.5sec. Driver-selectable engine management protocols also override some of the air suspension settings, the SQ7 can be raised or lowered slightly to suit the terrain and/or type of travel. It’s fair to mention that much of the kit which makes the SQ7, in this instance, a formidable sports machine, is optional. The entry-level car sits at $175,900, but the advanced suspension package, ceramic brake package, sport diff and rear steering are added cost extras. To my way of thinking if you paid the extra it would be money well spent, even just to experience the technology which makes an unrealistic sport machine the cat’s whiskers in terms of handling dynamics. What this drive also served to prove is that Audi is at the forefront of technology and that has lured me back into thinking a lot more about the brand, I simply can’t wait to see more exciting product from this high-profile German manufacturer come my way.

Mona Vale Homestead and Pantry was busy the day three generations of my family chose to share High Tea. The dining area was already full of small groups, with many tables graced with a three-level stand or two. The popping of corks and regular appearance of trays of Veuve Clicquot suggested we were not alone in our choice of the Boutique High Tea ($75 per person), the crème de la crème of three offerings available at the Pantry, and we couldn’t wait to taste the treats to come. And then it arrived. Wow. Christchurch-made stainless-steel frames and glistening white plates supported a feast of miniature savoury and sweet works of art. As we soon learnt, these treats were as complex in flavour as they were in their construction. The six-year-old was drawn to the ‘mince pie’ (Asian-spiced slowcooked sticky beef cheek pie), while my mother’s first bite was of the butter puff galette – a combination of Kikorangi blue cheese, roasted pear, caramelised onion and walnuts. The first impressions did not lead to disappointment; these morsels proved to be as good as they looked. My favourite was the beetroot and feta tartlet, as the complementary toasted almond, honey and fresh mint lifted it beyond the norm. What would a high tea be without… tea? Though you can opt for coffee, chai or hot chocolate (as my daughter did), it was tea for two. My mother went for ‘pure peppermint’, and for me, I followed the personable waitress’s suggestion of a ‘springtime chocolate mint’ tea with milk. The hot drinks, playing a key part in the proceedings, were brought to the table at a time indicated by us – in this case, again upon recommendation, it was after sandwiches, scones and tarts and to accompany the dessert collection. The presentation of the coconut sable Breton was irresistible to the six-year-old, but it was the discovery of pineapple compote inside one layer and coconut mousse in the other that made it her standout. I found the salted caramel in the pecan tartlet delicious, and it worked so well with its scorched pecans. For Mum, it was the pear Helene. Comprised of spiced pear, vanilla mousse and Belgium dark chocolate, it was a good one for someone with less of a sweet tooth. While high tea is traditionally an afternoon affair, you can have it all day at the Pantry. Though, whatever time you do make your reservation (and you must), once you are seated at the homestead, relax and don’t be in a hurry. It took time to prepare these delights, and you will not regret sitting back for two hours making your way through the smorgasbord of delicacies, while sipping on Champagne and a cup of Dilmah.

An air of tension pervaded Peterborough Street as a black tuxedo was semi lost in the shadows, given away only by the flash of crisp white shirtfront, as the stranger strode confidently towards the door of Sixty6. Below street level, the dim light fell upon faces in the crowd which turned to the new arrival. The cavern was for the evening, a mingling place of dashing heroes and mysterious ladies, the set upon which the James Bond themed inaugural fundraising event for St Andrew’s College Rowing Club, would be played out, with more to come in the future.

“Roll up, roll up!” cried the ringmaster as in a flurry of spangled costumed and serpentine limbed performers, the macabre circus rolled into town. Ensconced at Sixty6 on Peterborough, Oddities & Curios proved an accurate description; bizarre apparitions vied to accost the attention of guests entering the eccentric dreamland. Alongside the amusingly disturbing sideshow alley, the real business of gaming for charity progressed. Throughout the long evening, much financial bounty was gathered, to be later distributed to many local charities and the memories of the mad fun lingered on.

Organised by The Scottish Society of New Zealand Pipe Band, Pipes & Drams was an opportunity for whisky lovers to taste and learn about their chosen luxury, all to the unforgettable sounds of the bagpipes. Raising money to send a group of pipers far away to Glasgow, to compete at the World Pipe Band Championships was the main reason for the evening of kilted fun. Now, time for MY wee dram!

As the keys of the city were passed from summer to autumn, Strategy Creative hosted a marvellous party at The Centre of Contemporary Art (CoCA). The line of invitees had to be subjected to the ministrations of the very dodgy looking Dr Dan the Psychologist, who, mouthing a mixture of mumbo-jumbo and shamelessly big words, “analysed” them. Following the initiation of silliness, the time was good to mingle and enjoy the art of David Shrigley. Throughout the gallery, the sounds of admiration for the works and of hospitality being enjoyed, combined to make the evening’s soundtrack.

FINANCE FOR THE BRUNCHING MILLENNIAL Financial advisor Travis Hamilton gives us some tips on how to save for our retirement. Let’s face it, for the millennial generation there will be no guarantee a future government will pay them a pension and it’s likely that the retirement age will go up. These warnings are coming loud and clear. There remain many opportunities for millennials who want to take steps to create a brighter financial future.
NINE THINGS ANY MILLENNIAL CAN DO: KNOW YOUR GOALS What do your 40s, 50s, 60s and retirement look like? If you’re going to be that 70-year-old Kiwi that travels a lot, or wants income from property investment, plan backwards from that and work out what you need to do and how much money will be required. MAKE KIWISAVER WORK FOR YOU Negative attitudes around KiwiSaver benefits need to change. Balances are getting higher and it’s becoming a significant asset for many people. It’s worth noting that the minimum amount you should be putting into KiwiSaver is $1,086 so you receive the government’s tax credit of $543. This is a 50% return that you’ll struggle to find elsewhere. Consider the risk level, too. If you’re saving for your first property, you might want to be in a more conservative (or low-risk) fund, but if retirement is your goal, a high-growth fund will likely deliver you the best return, but at higher risk.
BUY A HOUSE WHERE YOU CAN AFFORD TO – NOW! They say that the best time to buy a property was yesterday, but that’s no use to millennials earning a decent wage but spending it on high rents in New Zealand’s major cities. Forget about where you can’t afford, carry on renting where you are and buy what you can afford to rent it out. If where you can afford is the “next big thing”, then the gains you make should be enough to kick-start a property search in your preferred area. TEAM UP WITH MATES FOR PROPERTY GAINS If you can’t borrow your deposit from the equity gains in your parents’ or grandparents’ properties, unite with your fellow millennials. Consider owning a property together, either to rent or for one couple to part-own and part-rent. At least this gets you onto the ladder. Lawyers can draft up all the necessary paperwork to make sure the ownership arrangement is fully understood.

REALISE YOUR MORTGAGE IS NOT SET IN STONE The contract between you and your lender isn’t a rigid one and mortgages should reflect the best aspects of your financial situation and interest rates, bank lending and your goals changes. Ultimately, the goal is to pay your mortgage off quickly, meaning you’ll repay less over time. Split your mortgage into manageable chunks to achieve a series of short-term goals. A five-per-cent chunk sits aside from the total and can have current best interest rates applied to it – it’s an easy way to make a dent in your debt. USE INVESTMENTS TO CREATE CASH FLOW Allocating some money to investments (which can be made on your behalf by a funds manager) can give you enough returns to pay off another debt. Cash flow can also be created from a property you’ve bought and rented out. MAKE TINY SACRIFICES NOW TO SAVE EXPONENTIALLY LATER For your mortgage, by making an increase in payments of around the price of a flat white a day, you could reduce your mortgage term by more than four years. That’s a huge saving when you consider that the average total repayment is more than two and half times the original loan amount. WORK ON YOUR FINANCIAL LITERACY Stop thinking you’re just one of those people that is “bad with money”. You can change that.
There are a vast number of books and online resources that can help, but in New Zealand most financial advisors will give you free financial advice – you’ve just got to ask. GET INSURANCE EARLY AND LEVEL YOUR PREMIUMS Your health and ability to earn an income are your biggest assets. To lose either would be a major financial set-back, which could put your life goals out of reach. The younger you sign up for health insurance, trauma, life and income protection, the more likely you’re to be covered without exclusions and the cheaper your premiums will be if you level them. By levelling the premium (whereby you pay a higher amount initially but the amount stays the same and doesn’t escalate with age), you’ll save tens of thousands over a lifetime.

THE PROPER RULES If there are no place cards, the hostess tells the diners which seat to take or requests they determine their own places. • The place of honour at the table is to the right side of the host because most people are right-handed. • Unless protocol is being observed, other guests should not be seated according to their importance. Beyond these few guidelines, guests should be arranged in the way the host feels will be most congenial for conversation. The most common are male/female and not seating partners next to each other. Once the meal has concluded, women and men separate with women congregating in the drawing room and the men left to play cards, drink and speak about the ways of the world…
THE STYLE RULES In the modern age, we figure a more relaxed approach is appropriate, so we’ve come up with a few strategies to keep dinner party conversations flowing and add a little humour to the night. Musical chairs: after your guests have finished a course, each man must move two seats to the right. This can spice up the night with a few risks involved; one a guest might end up sitting next to their husband at some point, which would be rather boring, or worse, their ex, which would have a slightly different outcome. When a person excuses themselves from the table to smoke or go to the bathroom, you – as the host or hostess – take their place. When they return, they must take yours. This continues throughout the evening and creates a fluid interchange. Pull names out of a hat – it’s a fair, no-nonsense way to make sure everyone has a seat and no one can complain. However, we would only suggest this method for small dinner parties, otherwise you’ll be standing with a hat in your hand while the main course slowly turns to blackened charcoal in the kitchen. At the end of the meal, we suggest turning tradition on its head by sending the men to the drawing room and leave the women sitting round the table to smoke, drink and talk about shagging.
